Assignment 2 - Tier 1: Preliminary Sources

I have decided to explore the topic of "Toyo Ito, specifically his interest in nature within architecture" for the general design component, and "surface architecture" for the more technical component.

Toyo Ito and Nature within Architecture:

  • Toyo Ito, Change the Geometry to Change the Architecture, "Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research Asia" (CAADRIA), Japan, 2006.
This paper explores the ways in which Toyo Ito is attempting to break away from the Modernist architectural monopoly and return buildings to a more harmonised relationship with nature. It gives several examples of Ito's work, in which he has used innovative and dynamic geometry to highlight this relationship.

  • Zuzanna Ufnalska, On the Origins of Fold in Three Projects by Toyo Ito: Fold as Generative Method of New Continuity, "Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research Asia" (CAADRIA), Japan, 2006.
This article discusses Toyo Ito's shift in design methods during the 1990's towards the geometrical concept of the "fold". Using examples of his work, Ufnalska explores the ways in which Ito has utilised the fold to enhance his designs and achieve his design objectives.

  • Fernando Marquez Cecilia and Richard Levene, El Croquis: Toyo Ito 1986-1995, Madrid, 1995.
This publication discusses the ways in which Toyo Ito has attempted to express his feelings and views through his work, and tries to emulate modern society's superficiality and technological focus. Through a collection of writings, interviews and discussion of particular works, we gain insight into the thought and techniques behind many of his famous buildings.

Surface Architecture:

  • David Leatherbarrow and Mohsen Mostafavi, Surface Architecture, MIT Press, 2005.
A study of the practical and theoretical isolation of the building surface as the subject of architectural design, and the relationship between the building's structural and non-structural elements.

  • Branko Kolarevic, Architecture in the Digital Age: Design and Manufacturing, Spon Press, New York, 2003.
This book discusses the ways in which digital technology is radically altering the ways in which contemporary architecture is conceived, designed and produced. It gives excellent insight into the way surface architecture has been affected by these changes, and the wider implications for the future.

  • Daniel Cardoso, Dennis Michaud and Lawrence Sass, Soft Facade: Steps into the Definition of a Responsive ETFE Facade for High-rise Buildings, Session 12: Pervasive Computing, eCAADE25, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2007.
A fascinating paper on a possible use of the free facade in the near future. The article proposes the replacement of glass in skyscrapers with a hollow, clear polymer material that can be embedded with a sensor network to provide touch responsive changes of opacity in the facade.
